The Ram brand is delaying the introduction of a fully electric pickup truck by about a year, citing slow demand for battery powered trucks.
Stellantis-owned Ram said Wednesday that it instead will fast track the rollout of a combination electric-and-gas powered version of its staple pickup, called the 1500 Ramcharger, to tap into strong consumer interest. The model adds a gas engine that serves as a generator to recharge the vehicle's main battery, delivering an estimated 690 miles of driving range.
So far Ram has stayed out of the electric-truck race as rivals piled in, including Ford Motor, General Motors, Rivian and Tesla. But cooling interest in EVs has created pricing pressure in the market for battery powered trucks, while demand for hybrid vehicles has grown.
Ram originally planned to launch an all-electric version of the 1500 pickup in the first half of 2025, but now says that vehicle will come sometime in 2026. It aims to deliver up to 500 miles of range with a higher-end battery option.
