The union representing Volkswagen workers plans a press conference Friday on the status of its talks with the carmaker, raising expectations that an agreement could be in the offing.

The IG Metall union said it scheduled a press conference at 1830 CET, without providing further details.

Earlier Friday, Volkswagen said talks with labor representatives were making progress, but that no agreement had been reached on a restructuring plan for the group's German operations.

Negotiators have been in discussions for weeks, trying to reach an agreement on how to proceed with cost cuts that would help Volkswagen restore its competitiveness.
