Exchange-Traded Funds, US Equities Mixed After Midday Trading

Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV were mixed, wit the latter edging lower. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was softer.

US benchmark stock indexes were mixed around midday Thursday as traders parsed jobless claims data following the Christmas holiday break.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) lost about 0.2% each.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) rose 0.2%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) were higher.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) gained 1.1%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) added 0.4%.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) was up 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) rose 0.5%, and its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) fell 0.6%.

Commodities

Crude oil was down 0.3%, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) lost 0.3%. Natural gas dropped 6.2%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) fell 5.8%.

Gold was 0.4% higher on Comex, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) rose 0.5%. Silver eased 0.1% while iShares Silver Trust (SLV) fell fractionally.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) was up 0.3%; Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) gained 0.2% while iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) was up 0.2%.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) was 0.5% lower; retail fund VanEck Vectors Retail ETF (RTH) and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) were rising.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) rose 0.2%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were higher. IShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) added 0.4%.

Industrial

Select Sector SPDR-Industrial (XLI) was up 0.1%, Vanguard Industrials (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were edging higher.
