North American Morning Briefing: Stock Futures Up As Tech Drives Gains

Dow Jones2024-12-31

OPENING CALL

Stock futures rose Tuesday with tech back on top for the final day of 2024.

Investor favorites such as MicroStrategy, Palantir and chip stocks led gains, after pulling back in recent days as traders took some risk off the table.

According to Dow Jones Market Data, the S&P 500 recorded its best consecutive years in 2023-2024 since 1997-1998.

But many are expecting the rally to slow in 2025, with valuations at lofty levels and the Federal Reserve growing more reluctant to cut interest rates.

Bond markets will close at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday, but stocks will trade as normal. Both markets will shut on New Year's Day.

Stocks to Watch

Boeing edged lower after falling 2.3% on Monday. The plane that crashed on Sunday in South Korea was a Boeing 737-800.

MicroStrategy, which has borrowed heavily to invest in bitcoin, rose 3% after falling more than 8% on Monday.

JD.com, NIO, Alibaba: U.S.-listed shares of Chinese companies rose after President Xi Jinping said China had hit its target of 5% economic growth for 2024 and pledged more economic support next year.

Tesla was recently up 1.3% following a three-day selloff. It is expected to release fourth-quarter and full-year deliveries and production figures this week.

MARKET WRAPS

Forex:

The dollar was lower as investors adjusted portfolios at the end of the year and booked profits after the currency's stellar gains over 2024, particularly since Donald Trump's election victory.

The dollar has come under mild selling pressure in the final days of 2024, Jefferies said but the DXY dollar index has gained 6.5% in 2024, boosted by a strong U.S. economy.

Investors now expect the Fed will cut interest rates by much less than most had anticipated at the start of the year.

Continued economic strength relative to other major economies could lift the currency further in 2025.

The yen remained at very weak levels against the dollar, dropping sharply during December due to higher U.S. bond yields and the Bank of Japan's cautious approach to raising interest rates, MUFG said.

Energy:

Oil was poised to end the year lower on weaker demand, particularly in China, with Brent on track to end 2024 down 3.5%.

Tuesday's modest gains might reflect an expansion in Chinese factory activity, market watchers said, boosting expectations of demand from China.

Metals:

Gold continued to trade broadly sideways in thin holiday trading and in the absence of fresh catalysts.

That said, the precious metal has had a stellar year in 2024 overall, Swissquote Bank said, and stands to finish the year up nearly 21%, reflecting a combination of U.S. monetary policy easing and geopolitical tensions.

Gold could see more gains in 2025 in case of a downside correction in global equity markets,Swissquote Bank said.

Trump Endorses Mike Johnson for House Speaker, but Doubts Remain

WASHINGTON-President-elect Donald Trump endorsed House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) for another term Monday, as Johnson worked the phones to tamp down rumblings from some Republicans who have suggested the party seek an alternative leader.

Johnson is a "good, hard working, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN," said Trump, who wants to pass a broad border-and tax-policy agenda in his second term, on Truth Social. "Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement," he said, while imploring Republicans not to blow their opportunity.
