Eurozone Inflation Looks Set to Keep Trending Above Target -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-07 20:31

1231 GMT - Eurozone inflation looks unlikely to drop below the European Central Bank's target in the first half of the new year, Vincent Stamer at Commerzbank Research writes in a note. Inflation across the 20-member currency area rose again in December, hitting 2.4% from 2.2% a month earlier. Core inflation was steady, while energy and food prices drove the increase. Those trends suggests inflation is unlikely to undershoot the ECB's 2% target in the first six months of 2025, Stamer says. Some ECB rate setters have in recent months warned of the danger of undershooting that target as the eurozone economy flags and new global risks emerge. (joshua.kirby@wsj.com; @joshualeokirby)
