U.S. Adds Tencent to List of Firms With Alleged Chinese Military Ties -- Market Talk

Dow Jones01-07

1434 ET - Tencent Holdings, a Chinese videogame and social-media company, was added to a list of firms that the Defense Department says work with China's military. The annual list of what the department calls "Chinese military companies" is formally mandated under U.S. law and includes 134 companies, according to the list. Other new additions to this year's list include battery maker CATL and chip maker Changxin Memory Technologies. The designation doesn't involve immediate bans, but it can hurt a company's reputation and warn U.S. firms of conducting business with them. Tencent didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from The Wall Street Journal. Tencent ADRs fall 7.6%, to $49.16. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
