Camden Property Trust to Seek Dismissal of US Justice Department Claims

Camden Property Trust (CPT) said late Tuesday it disagrees with allegations in an amended complaint filed by the US Department of Justice in its lawsuit against RealPage, which now includes Camden and other landlords as defendants.

The company said it will defend itself and plans to seek dismissal of the claims.

The Department of Justice has filed a complaint accusing several companies, including Camden, of participating in an algorithmic pricing scheme that allegedly harmed renters.

Camden said many of the Justice Department's allegations stem from actions taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the company froze evictions, waived late fees, and provided residents over $10 million in direct financial support.

"Rental rates are a result of many factors, most importantly government regulations limiting housing supply," Camden said. "When supply is limited by government regulations, rents go up."
