Exchange-Traded Funds Higher, Equity Futures Mixed Pre-Bell Thursday as Large Cap Earnings Continue

The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was up 0.2% and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 0.4% in Thursday's premarket activity as large cap earnings continue to pour in ahead of fresh inflation data.

US stock futures were mixed, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.1%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.2%, and Nasdaq futures gaining 0.3% before the start of regular trading.

The national retail sales bulletin for December and the weekly jobless claims bulletin will be released at 8:30 am ET, as will the Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index for January, and the import and export prices report for December.

The business inventories report for November will be posted at 10 am ET, along with the National Association of Home Builders' Housing Market Index for January.

The weekly EIA natural gas report is slated for a 10:30 am ET release.

In premarket activity, bitcoin was down by 0.2% and the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) retreated marginally by 0.04%.

Power Play:

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) advanced 0.04% and the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) was up 0.1%. The iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) was inactive.

Cadre Holdings (CDRE) stock was up 4.3% before the opening bell after the company said that it signed a definitive deal to acquire two Carr's Group engineering units for 75 million pounds ($91.5 million) in cash at closing.

Winners and Losers:

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) advanced 0.8%, and the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.1% higher, while the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was inactive. Among semiconductor ETFs, SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 1.4%.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) shares were up 4% in recent Thursday premarket activity after the company reported higher Q4 earnings and sales, and issued an upbeat Q1 revenue outlook.

Health Care

The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) retreated 0.2%. The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) was flat while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) gained 0.4%. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was down 0.3%.

UnitedHealth Group (UNH) stock was down 3.2% premarket after the company reported lower-than-expected Q4 revenue.

Financial

Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) advanced 0.2%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 0.6%, while its bearish counterpart Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was 0.3% lower.

Morgan Stanley (MS) shares were up 2.5% pre-bell Thursday after the company reported higher Q4 earnings and net revenue.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) retreated 0.2%, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) was down by 0.4%.

Genesis Energy (GEL) stock was up 1.6% before Thursday's opening bell after the company maintained its quarterly distribution for common unitholders.

Consumer

The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLP) was up 0.3%, while the Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund (VDC) gained 0.3%. The iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive, and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY) advanced 0.1%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was inactive, while the SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) was flat.

Toyota Motor (TM) shares were down 1.6% pre-bell after the company's Hino Motors unit reached a $1.6 billion settlement with US authorities for falsifying carbon dioxide emissions data and smuggling engines into the US.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil retreated 0.9% to $79.29 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was up 0.8% at $4.12 per 1 million British Thermal Units. United States Oil Fund (USO) was down 0.4%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 0.6% higher.

Gold futures for February advanced 0.4% to $2,729.50 an ounce on the Comex, and silver futures gained 0.6% to reach $31.72 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) increased 0.2%, while the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) slipped 0.2%.
