U.K. annual grocery inflation in February was flat compared with a month earlier, supported by higher spending on promotions, according to the latest report from research firm Kantar.
Grocery inflation for the four-week period ending Feb. 23 stood at 3.3%, with competition between retailers helping to keep prices steady. The report showed that almost a third of items shoppers' baskets were on offer.
The grocers' own premium-label lines continue to be popular, with sales up 13% on year in February as shoppers sought cheaper options to treat themselves.
Budget-conscious shoppers have been becoming less loyal to brands after years of inflation as the consumer goods sector lifted prices to pass on higher costs. In February, the maker of KitKat chocolate bars and Nescafe coffee Nestle posted its weakest annual organic sales growth in more than a quarter of a century.
Tesco was among the top-performing grocer in the month, with sales growth reaching its highest since March 2024 at 5.8% and holding the 28.3% of the market share in the 12 weeks to Feb. 23.
Ocado was the fastest-growing retailer for the 10th consecutive month, with spending increasing by 9.6% and share of the market at 1.9%.
