Hong Kong's Employment, Vacancies Drop in December 2024

Total employment in Hong Kong's private sector surveyed fell by 0.3% year over year in December 2024, with a 20% drop in the total number of vacancies to 58,410, data from the Census and Statistics Department showed Friday.

In December 2024, the selected industries employed a total of a little over 2.7 million people.

The import and export trade, professional and business services, and financing and insurance niches engaged 354,500, 311,500, and 233,300 individuals. Retail trade and food and beverage services employed 232,700 and 220,900 people.

Of the 58,410 private sector vacancies in the month, 5,950 were from the education industry, 5,670 from professional and business services, and 5,480 from food and beverage services. 4,990 and 4,920 vacancies were seen in the residential care and social work services and financing and insurance sectors.

Compared with September 2024, the seasonally adjusted total employment and total vacancies in the surveyed industries decreased by 0.1% and 5.3%, respectively, in December 2024.
