1354 ET - After strikes hurt 2024 movie box-office results, this year's prospects aren't great, according to TD Cowen. After Disney's banner year in 2024, this year's overall slate is "even more Disney-centric than last year," the analysts say, but "Captain America: Brave New World" and "Snow White" had disappointing results. There's more to it than streaming. Film quality is also a factor, TD Cowen says, citing Rotten Tomatoes scores. Last year's fifty most widely released movies averaged a 62.9 score, the lowest since 2020, the firm says, singling out low-rated titles such as "Joker: Folie a Deux" and "Madame Web." TD Cowen expects U.S. screen count will continue to decline as current levels can't be "supported solely by a handful of blockbusters."(josh.beckerman@wsj.com)
