Japan's producer price index rose 4.2% on year in March and gained 0.4% from February, reported the Bank of Japan on Wednesday.
The PPI had risen by a more modest 4.1% on-year in February.
Pushing up the PPI in March were beverage and foods, up 3.1% on year, and petroleum and coal products, up 8.6%, among other items.
Transportation equipment gained 1.8% on year while electric power, gas and water bills rose 6.4% on year in March.
The PPI measures prices at the factory gate, or those charged to businesses and distributors. It is distinct from the consumer price index (CPI), which measures prices in retail locations.
The PPI is considered a precursor to future movements in the CPI, as retailers try to recoup costs.
