1021 ET - Large restaurant chains lost some market share in 2024 to smaller brands and independent eateries, UBS analysts say in a research note. Sales for the small and independent cohort rose 3.8%, an improvement from the year prior, while large chains grew 3.1%, a downshift from 2023, the analysts say. The small chains did particularly well in picking up more of the slumping burger and pizza market, they say. The large-brand cohort is expected to accelerate sales growth this year, based on historical growth trends at major players including McDonald's, Starbucks, and Chick-fil-A, the analysts say. They expect bigger chains to reclaim some share given their scale advantages. (dean.seal@wsj.com)
