Uber Technologies (UBER) filed on Wednesday a lawsuit against a group of lawyers, medical providers, and drivers for allegedly defrauding the ride-hailing company by filing false insurance claims.
The fraud involved fake accident reports, manufactured car damage, "unnecessary" medical procedures, and "sham" lawsuits seeking inflated payouts, according to the civil complaint filed in federal court in Florida.
The company alleged that drivers were recruited with bribes to stage accidents with cars so Uber could be sued for "non-existing damages."
"Uber has suffered, and continues to suffer, substantial costs defending against the fraudulent allegations as a result of this scheme," it said.
The company said it is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, and a halt to the conduct.
