Costco Picks California as Site of Its First Standalone Retail Fuel Station -- OPIS

Dow Jones06-17

Costco Wholesale plans to open its first standalone retail fuel station next year in Mission Viejo, Calif., a city spokesman said Monday.

The planned site will also be the company's largest retail fuel operation.

Costco ranks second in gasoline market share in California based on visit counts at 15.47% and is gaining on first-place Chevron, at 17.27%, according to OPIS MarketSharePro.

The company is selling fuel in the state at about 53cts/gal below market, OPIS data showed.

Costco plans later this year to raze a vacant Bed, Bath & Beyond store and build a 17,234-square-foot fueling canopy with 20 multi-product dispensers and 40 pumping stations, as well as an office and breakroom for employees, city documents show.

The station will be built within the Mission Viejo Freeway Center, a shopping center off of I-5.

Though California regulators have been hostile to the oil industry, with several towns banning new gasoline stations, Mission Viejo has welcomed the Costco station.

Robert Schick, director of community relations for Mission Viejo, said he "couldn't speak to what other cities are doing" but he said the mayor of Mission Viejo is "excited" about the project.

The city's planning and transportation commission approved Costco's fuel station in March.

Costco didn't return an inquiry for more details.
