President Trump changed his position on his so-called reciprocal tariff deadline multiple times in the last 24 hours, saying it could be extended before insisting that it will not, and then arguing that it was never altered to begin with.
Trump on Monday issued an executive order shifting the date for re-imposing tariffs from July 9 to August 1. That night, he told reporters that the deadline was "firm, but not 100% firm," and that he was open to deals with other nations. On Tuesday morning, he posted online that "no extensions would be granted," before claiming later that day that he never changed the deadline in the first place.
"It wasn't a change," Trump said during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, before adding that his order was a "clarification, maybe" to the effective date of tariffs.
