Toyota Motor Corp. will open Woven City, a demonstration city for advanced technology under construction in Shizuoka Prefecture, on Sept. 25, the automaker announced Monday.
In the first phase, about 360 people -- made up of Toyota employees and their families -- will reside in a total area of about 47,000 square meters. Development of new mobility services will take place there.
The number of companies collaborating in the demonstration experiment has increased from seven to 19, according to Toyota. Primarily consisting of Toyota group companies, a space company and a pharmaceutical company are among those who have joined.
A ceremony involving Toyota officials and other related people will be held on the opening day. There are 14 buildings, including a residential area, in the city. Toyota has also established a logistics network that delivers goods using autonomous delivery robots. There are three types of roads, including one designated for pedestrians and another for autonomous vehicles. Traffic signals will change based on the movement of pedestrians and vehicles to smooth the flow of traffic.
Those living in Woven City will provide feedback on these services to researchers. Ordinary people will be allowed to visit the city from the fiscal year starting April 2026.
Woven City is being developed on the site of a former automobile factory. Toyota plans to expand the city to about 700,000 square meters in the future.
