Kirin Brewery Co. announced on Thursday it has established a new company in Malaysia to handle alcoholic beverage sales and other operations in the Southeast Asian region, with plans to begin conducting business on Oct. 1.
The company aims to strengthen sales in Southeast Asia, which is experiencing population growth and economic expansion, and focus primarily on its flagship "Hyoketsu" chuhai brand.
Southeast Asian countries show a strong interest in Japanese culture, and the alcoholic beverage market there is expected to expand. The company aims to swiftly gain an understanding of local demand through the new subsidiary to boost sales.
"We want to advance rapid decision-making, including on product launches coordinated with Japan," President and CEO Hideki Horiguchi said at a briefing in Tokyo on Thursday.
With the domestic alcoholic beverage market shrinking, Kirin is accelerating the expansion of its overseas operations. At the briefing, the company unveiled a target of increasing the ratio of overseas sales from 7% in 2024 to 20% by 2035. It has designated Asia, North America and Oceania as key regions to focus on.
