ADX is also lining up a string of three low-risk, near-field gas targets and an appraisal well that could rapidly ramp up both gas and oil production and deliver a serious growth surge.Work at Welchau-1 was forced into a holding pattern earlier this year after the State Administrative Court of Upper Austria weighed up objections from four environmental groups over ADX’s drilling and exploration approvals. With a separate ruling also removing the ability for companies to keep operating while challenges were assessed, ADX had no choice but to hit pause and wait out the legal process.However, in September the circuit breakers were finally flicked back on. The court confirmed ADX’s permits were compliant with environmental and regulatory standards, noting the company had run a safe and responsible operation to date.The ruling also appears to have been a warning shot across the bow of environmental activists who have been leaning on legal roadblocks to stall Austria’s renewed drive for home-grown gas.With energy security now firmly back in the national agenda in light of the European ban on Russian pipeline gas, the court’s message seems clear - lawfare won’t automatically allow activists to derail the country’s push to bolster its own supply.ADX drilled its Welchau-1 well in early 2024 and wasted no time stealing the headlines, cracking open a massive 450-metre hydrocarbon zone that immediately flagged a potentially game-changing discovery.Early analysis pointed to a sizeable liquids-rich gas and condensate system, with estimates ranging from 12 to 217 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMBOE), with a hefty mean of 85MMBOE on the cards.However, things got even more interesting a few months later when ADX suggested the find was actually hosting high-quality light oil with gas riding shotgun - a far more lucrative proposition than the initial gas-heavy interpretation.The company still holds a commanding 75 per cent economic interest in Welchau and its broader ADX-AT-II licence. Austrian energy player MCF Energy was brought in with a 25 per cent farm-in deal in late 2023, which saw MCF fund half of the Welchau-1 drilling bill up to €5.1 million (A$9 million). MCF remains solidly in the frame and continues to carry its share of future exploration and appraisal costs as momentum builds.With its legal stoush now in the rear view mirror, ADX plans to clean out the well to lower pressure before reopening it in January. It will then clear any blockages in the rock and help the fluids flow more easily. Importantly, a potential future deepening of the well remains on the cards to chase the “Welchau Deep” target below the current depth.ADX’s near-term strategy to boost production meanwhile hinges on finding new shallow gas plays. The company has matured seven drill-ready prospects, each described as low-risk, low-cost and close to existing infrastructure, which means they can be monetised quickly.Three of those prospects — HOCH-1, GOLD-1 and SCHOE-1 — have made the starting lineup for an initial drilling trio slated to kick off in February 2026, each aiming to tap into clean, high-grade biogenic gas, which typically runs at about 99 per cent methane.And if this first wave delivers the goods, the momentum could snowball quickly. Another four prospects in ADX’s 100-per-cent-owned acreage are already teed up for follow-on drilling, paving the way for fast-tracked, scalable production growth.Oil is also set to play a starring role, with ADX gearing up to drill the SGB-1 appraisal well late in 2026 just north of the Anshof field, chasing proven Eocene sands and deeper Cretaceous targets. Crucially, the well sits right beside Anshof’s new 3,000-barrel-a-day production facility, which means any discovery can be fast-tracked straight into cashflow. With a very high chance of success, ADX aims to bring in a partner while keeping plenty of upside in its own deck.ADX says it has already locked in drill sites for all four wells, while permitting continues to move through the system and long-lead items are being lined up to ensure the rigs can roll in as soon as the new year arrives.The potential of Welchau-1 has not been conclusively assessed to date. The well may also be deepened at a future time with the appropriate permits to assess further exploration potential below the current depth of the well - Welchau Deep prospect. Meanwhile, the shallow gas drilling program including the HOCH, GOLD and SCHOE prospects together with the SGB oil appraisal well next to the Anshof field, provides an exceptional opportunity for organic growth. Success with the initial shallow gas play program will enable additional follow up drilling across multiple shallow gas prospects which are being matured by the Company. ADX Energy executive chairman Mr Ian TchacosManagement says the busy 2026 drilling blitz will be bankrolled by existing cash reserves and incoming production revenues and there will be no immediate need to rattle the tin in front of shareholders. And when it comes to the SGB-1 oil appraisal well, ADX is already in talks with potential partners and expects to lock in a farmout deal before year’s end.With the court fight settled, fresh funding options on the table and drill rigs queuing up for a big year ahead, ADX Energy is primed to turn Austrian potential into production reality.Welchau-1 remains the headline act, but the real magic may come from a steady beat of shallow gas and near-field oil hits feeding straight into existing infrastructure.And if the company can start landing commercial flows early in 2026, ADX may just find itself at the centre of Europe’s energy security push.Is your ASX-listed company doing something interesting?
