BASF's Chemicals Recovery, Buyback Should Boost Confidence -- Market Talk

Dow Jones10-29

0852 GMT - BASF's buyback news and improved results for its chemicals segment should reassure investors, Citi analysts write. A buyback of 1.5 billion euros was larger than most expected, they says. This should be taken as a sign of confidence in the German chemical giant's underlying earnings strength and balance sheet potential, despite gloom in the EU chemicals market, the analysts note. An uptick in demand in the bloc is expected, the analysts write. Still, risks include tariffs, EU deindustrialization and an aggressive expansion in China that could squeeze margins, the analysts add. Shares rise 3.1% to 44.34 euros. (william.gray@wsj.com)
