U.S. Stocks Recover in Late Trading -- Market Talk

Dow Jones11-08

1607 ET - U.S. stocks end well off the worst levels of the session after falling early as the government shutdown weighs on consumers' moods. University of Michigan sentiment is now just slightly above the levels that the index sank to amid the historic inflation that hit in 2022 during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Dow Industrials and S&P 500 turn higher near the close after Democrats propose extending expiring healthcare subsidies for one year to end the shutdown, giving investors hope that a deal may be closer. DJIA gains 74 points, or 0.2%, to 46987, the S&P 500 rises 0.1% to 6728, while the Nasdaq slips 0.2% to 23004. (patrick.sullivan@wsj.com)
