Big Box Stores Facing Challenging Holiday Season -- Market Talk
Dow Jones11-12
1219 ET - Big box stores posted strong back-to-school sales, which usually indicates a strong holiday season will follow, but that pattern may not hold this year, say D.A. Davidson analysts Michael Baker and Keegan Cox. A perfect storm of tariffs, stagflation concerns, a lack of policy clarity, slowing job growth and low-end consumer weakness could set retailers up for a difficult holiday. While the end to the government shutdown would help, point-of-sale data is already showing a slowdown in spending and tariffs are set to weigh on companies' margins more than they did earlier this year.
