MDU Resources (MDU) joined the North Plains Connector utility consortium through a nonbinding memorandum of understanding with North Plains Connector, a Grid United subsidiary, the companies said Tuesday.
The agreement gives MDU Resources 150 megawatts of capacity on the planned 3,000-megawatt, 420-mile high-voltage direct current transmission line connecting the Eastern and Western Interconnections.
North Plains Connector, co-developed by Grid United and ALLETE (ALE), aims to link three regional power markets to improve grid reliability and resilience. Construction is expected to begin in 2028, with operations starting in 2032.
