Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. $(MUFG)$ announced on Wednesday that it will introduce a service through a collaboration with U.S.-based OpenAI, which specializes in conversational AI, into the personal finance apps of its group companies. The "AI concierge" will respond to customer inquiries via chat and provide investment proposals.
The feature will be rolled out starting with MUFG's "digital bank," scheduled to launch in fiscal 2026. This is expected to be the first instance of a Japanese financial institution integrating OpenAI functionality into its app.
The AI concierge will propose optimal services based on factors including the customer's conversation history and purchasing data. For example, based on patterns of which convenience stores a customer uses, it can recommend ones where the customer accumulates points more easily.
MUFG is also considering features in which AI assists with opening bank or securities accounts and applying for cards, as well as AI-powered household budget management.
"We want to translate the evolution of AI technology into the evolution of our apps," MUFG Managing Corporate Executive Tadashi Yamamoto said at a press conference on Wednesday. "We are challenging ourselves to innovate customer experience," he added.
Tadao Nagasaki, president of OpenAI's Japan arm emphasized, "This is a solid step toward a future where AI seamlessly integrates into daily life."
Among the megabank groups, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. plans to partner with SoftBank to integrate generative AI into its comprehensive financial service "Olive." This will enable analyzing usage patterns and allow for timely advice for topics such as the early repayment of mortgages.
