WH Smith's CEO Resignation Likely to Provide Some Relief -- Market Talk

Dow Jones11-19

1103 GMT - WH Smith's CEO resignation combined with reassurance on profitability in key markets should provide some relief, Goodbody analyst Fintan Ryan writes in a note. The CEO's departure follows an accounting review that revealed issues within the North America division, reflecting the seriousness with which management is addressing the situation, he says. Additionally, U.K. and the rest of world businesses remain profitable, which should ease market sentiment. While WH Smith still has significant work ahead to rebuild credibility--and uncertainties remain around the pace of growth and future tender wins in North America amid internal changes--this "appear to be a good starting point," he says. Shares are up 3.8% at 6.37 pounds. ( najat.kantouar@wsj.com)
