ASX Midday Sector Update: Energy Stocks Up, Communication Services Leads Selloff

Energy stocks rose 0.5% at midday Monday, one of the only two sectors trading in the green, after Brent crude closed over 2% higher on Friday. However, Brent crude futures fell nearly 1% after loadings resumed at the Russian port of Novorossiysk.

New Hope's (ASX:NHC) run-of-mine (ROM) coal production fell to 3.9 million tonnes in the quarter ended Oct. 31, from 4 million tonnes last year, and its coal sales fell to 2.7 million tonnes from 2.8 million tonnes. The company reported underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization of AU$107.9 million for the quarter, down from AU$304.6 million in the previous year.

Meanwhile, the communication services sector fell 0.7%.

CAR Group (ASX:CAR) appointed Geoff Trumbull as chief financial officer, effective March 2, 2026. Stephen Wong will resume his role as chief strategy officer after serving as interim CFO.
