London's Miners Fall as Markets Await U.S Economic Data -- Market Talk

Dow Jones11-17

0832 GMT - London's miners fall in opening trade. "The next few days could be key for long term direction of stocks and how they perform into year end," Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB writes. Investors are waiting for U.S. economic data that will be crucial to determining if the Federal Reserve cuts rates next month, she says. Markets now believe that there is less than a 50% chance of a cut by year end, something which had been a near certainty a month ago, she adds. An interest rate cut would reduce borrowing costs and help stimulate demand for metals and minerals. Anglo American, Valterra Platinum and copper miner Antofagasta fall around 1%. Hochschild Mining falls 0.8% and Glencore drops 0.3%.(adam.whittaker@wsj.com)
