Travelers Seeks Court Ruling on Google Coverage in Social Media Addiction Cases

MT Newswires Live11-19

Travelers (TRV) has filed a declaratory judgment action against Google, Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), and YouTube in the Delaware Superior Court.

The insurer seeks a ruling on its obligations under policies issued to Google from 2004 to 2007, court documents show.

Travelers unit St. Paul Fire & Marine Insurance argues it is not required to cover claims tied to a series of suits, dubbed the "Social Media Lawsuits," that accuse Google and YouTube of fostering addictive behavior in minors, leading to emotional and physical harm, including fatalities.

According to the complaint, Travelers provided both primary and umbrella/excess coverage to Google and its predecessors. The company now asks the court to determine whether those policies extend to the alleged harms at issue.

Alphabet didn't respond immediately to a request for comment from MT Newswires.

Travelers shares rose 1.3% in recent Tuesday trading, and Alphabet gained 0.5%
