The suspect in the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., worked with CIA-backed military units during the U.S. war in Afghanistan, the agency said Thursday.

Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29 years old, is suspected of ambushing the National Guard members near the White House on Wednesday afternoon in an attack President Trump later described as an "act of terror."

Lakanwal came to the U.S. in September 2021 after the American withdrawal from Afghanistan, CIA Director Jim Ratcliffe said Thursday. The suspect had worked with the U.S. government, including with the CIA in Kandahar, Ratcliffe said.

The National Guard members remain in critical condition, Attorney General Pam Bondi said during an interview with Fox News early Thursday.

The National Guard members were on patrol when the shooter allegedly came from around a corner and opened fire, according to Metropolitan Police Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll. "It appears to be a lone gunman that raised a firearm and ambushed these members of the National Guard," Carroll said. Law enforcement shot the suspect, and he is in the hospital in police custody.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said in a post on X Wednesday that it was stopping the processing of all immigration requests of Afghan nationals "pending further review of security and vetting protocols."
