United Microelectronics (TPE:2303) signed a memorandum of understanding with Polar Semiconductor to explore collaboration on US-based production of 8-inch wafers.
Under the deal, the companies will identify devices that Polar Semiconductor could manufacture at its expanded 8-inch fab in Minnesota.
The partnership combines Polar's U.S. manufacturing capabilities with UMC's 8-inch technology portfolio and global customer base, according to a Thursday filing with the Taiwan Exchange.
United Microelectronics expects no immediate financial impact and will announce a formal deal later.
