Uber is expanding its robotaxi operations to Dallas.
The ride-hailing platform said Wednesday the service will start with a smaller fleet and expand to hundreds of robotaxis across Dallas in the next few years, following a similar approach it used in Austin and Atlanta.
The robotaxis will include an on-board specialist monitoring behind the wheel during a phased introduction, with plans to roll out fully driverless operations in the future, Uber said.
The service will be available starting in a nine square mile stretch of Dallas. Uber said it plans to expand that territory in the coming months.
The service will use robotaxis from Avride, an autonomous vehicle startup owned by Nebius.
Avride will manage its own fleet to start, with plans for Uber to take over the vehicles' day-to-day operations in the future including cleaning, inspections and charging.
The offering is part of a multiyear partnership with Avride announced last year. Under the partnership, Uber has rolled out the startup's delivery robots on its food delivery platform in a handful of cities. Uber also participated in a strategic investment of up to $375 million in Avride in October.
Uber has been working to rapidly scale its robotaxi operations recently as competition to offer commercial AV rides heats up across the world. The company currently offers AVs on its platform in Atlanta, Austin and Phoenix in the U.S., and internationally in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.
The company works with more than 20 AV partners across its mobility, delivery and freight services.
