China's Embrace of Open-Source AI Raises Concerns, Meta Chief AI Scientist Says -- Market Talk

Dow Jones12-04

1053 GMT - China fully embracing open-source AI isn't necessarily a good thing, departing Meta Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun says at the ai-Pulse event in Paris. Open-source AI models and tools are publicly available, allowing anyone to study, modify and improve them. Many of the strongest open-source large language models today are coming from China, he notes. "We need models that are easily modifiable" he says, "but not ones that are preconditioned with the principles of the Chinese government," he adds. According to LeCun, this concern creates reluctance among many users when it comes to adopting Chinese models. (najat.kantouar@wsj.com)
