Average U.S. Buyer's Agent Commission Up Slightly in 3Q -- Market Talk

Dow Jones12-08

0959 ET - The average U.S. buyer's agent commission was 2.42% for homes sold in 3Q, up from 2.36% a year earlier, according to Redfin. Commissions were virtually flat from 2Q at 2.43%, leveling out after minor upticks in three consecutive quarters. Commissions are now at roughly the same level they were in 1Q of 2024, when the National Association of Realtors first announced a settlement dictating new commission rules in response to a class-action lawsuit brought by home sellers. The average buyer's agent commission fell to a low of 2.36% in 3Q 2024, but has nudged slightly higher since, as a slowdown in home sales gave buyers more negotiating power. If demand were high and homes were selling fast, Redfin believes there would be more sellers offering a lower commission to buyer's agents. Buyers can ask for a higher commission for their agents knowing they may be the only offer on the table, Redfin says. (chris.wack@wsj.com)
