At Degrussa, a single discovery hole of 20.1 metres grading 4.4 per cent copper and 2.5 grams per tonne (g/t) gold, uncovered the ultra-high-grade zones that eventually propelled Sandfire from a modest junior into a multi-billion-dollar producer.The company says a recent moving loop electromagnetic (MLEM) survey pinpointed a north-dipping conductive plate, covering roughly 2km of strike and slicing through a robust magnetic anomaly at depth in a zone ripe for mineralisation.Historical soil sampling flagged gold traces alongside arsenic highs, marking shallow, untested prospects that align with the contact between the Naracoota Volcanics and Karalundi Formation - key hosts to Bryah Basin systems.The DeGrussa discovery itself serves as a benchmark for the basin’s potential. In 2009, Sandfire Resources drilled a hole to follow up on an EM anomaly that led to the discovery. The discovery would quickly become Australia’s highest grade copper resource, with subsequent holes revealing even thicker mineralisation, including 109m at 5.9 per cent copper and 2.0g/t gold and a remarkable 70m hit running an unthinkable 18.5 per cent copper and 9.8g/t gold.The drilling sequence transformed Sandfire’s fortunes and share price. Trading at around 15c pre-discovery, the stock soared to about $4 within four months—a gain of 2600 per cent - before exceeding 4500 per cent within a couple of years.The mine went on to produce from a resource of 13.8 million tonnes at 4.8 per cent copper and 1.8g/t gold for ten of the richest years in Australia’s copper mining history.Previous operators at Solara’s ground - including Sandfire in 2009 - conducted airborne VTEM work and mapped similar conductive breaks, gravity anomalies and structural traps. However, many remained untouched, with drilling skewed toward deeper copper plays rather than near-surface gold targets.The company says that downhole electromagnetic surveys will follow drilling to test for conductors or extensions, potentially paving the way for diamond follow-ups to deepen or expand the program.The effort has also drawn backing from a $180,000 government grant, accelerating Solara’s push into the under drilled western flank of the basin.Solara has pushed hard to get on the ground and test targets at Degrussa West in 2025. The region has been under scrutiny for copper exploration for a number of years, with gold being a secondary focus. Grid drilling in other parts of the Bryah Basin occurred, but Degrussa West wasn’t treated with this level of scrutiny.
