Appearing on Sunrise, she said that the project simply makes no economic sense.“This line is a dud, and the hub that it’s trying to connect to doesn’t even exist,” Young said.“What’s critical is that this is going to cost all of us more in our hip pockets, in what we pay later in our energy prices.”New England REZ project map Credit: SuppliedHost Nat Barr highlighted that EnergyCo has said that the line in question has already moved once, will impact fewer koalas and that they have already engaged with the community.Young denied being consulted, saying that “we only found out in October this year, with less than 24 hours’ notice before it went public”.She described the consultation as “poor”, saying EnergyCo plans to start acquiring land from mid-next year before completing environmental impact studies in the second half of 2026.“They’re going to start acquiring land before they’ve even done the studies,” she said.The proposed route cuts through the New England region, which produces about 22 per cent of NSW’s beef supply.Farmers argue there are better alternatives, including using existing easements where current power lines are located.“We want them to be responsible. This is going to be so damaging to farmers.”“We just want to get back to our job — we want to feed the country, we want to pass on this land in a better condition than what we received it, and they’re taking away that option because they have forcible powers to put these lines in place, which just isn’t fair,” she said.A statement from EnergyCo stated that “EnergyCo made refinements to the New England Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) transmission corridor following more detailed technical and environmental studies and feedback from communities and stakeholders”.“The decision to move part of the route resulted from months of detailed analysis aimed at minimising environmental and community impact and improving technical and construction outcomes”.“Since publishing the new study area for consultation in October 2025, EnergyCo has engaged extensively with landowners, communities, and councils in the region to share information and listen to feedback. Community input is critical so we can find the best possible route for the transmission lines while minimising impacts to the local environment, farming and existing land uses,” the statement said.“Consultation with landowners will continue over the coming months.
