Market Chatter: SMIC, Huawei Advance Chip Tech Despite US Curbs, Think Tank Says

Huawei and partner Semiconductor Manufacturing International (HKG:0981, SHA:688981) saw developments in their semiconductor production technology despite attempts by the U.S. to curb progress, Bloomberg reported, citing research firm TechInsights.

SMIC produced Huawei's Kirin 9030 smartphone processor using an improved version of its technology, and is "China's most advanced domestic semiconductor manufacturing to date," the report said.

The Kirin 9030 represents "incremental but meaningful scaling beyond its previous generation," Bloomberg quoted TechInsights as saying.

Both Huawei and SMIC are under the U.S. entity list, which controls exports to the companies and limits semiconductor technology access, the report said.
