Market Chatter: Thai Prime Minister Seeks Royal Approval to Dissolve Parliament

MT Newswires Live12-12

Thailand faces new political uncertainty as Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul seeks royal approval to dissolve parliament, which would set an early February general election, Nikkei reported Friday.

Citing the Royal Gazette, Nikkei said that King Maha Vajiralongkorn endorsed the request.

Anutin, Thailand's third prime minister since August 2023, promised the opposition party to dissolve parliament within months of taking office. His government has faced criticism over the handling of deadly floods in Hat Yai, while border clashes with Cambodia continue, according to the report.

The last general election was held in May 2023, the Nikkei added.
