Former Boston Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca and his wife, Judy Pagliuca, have sold their Back Bay home for $11.5 million, roughly two months after listing it for $10.995 million.
The buyer is Ron Sargent, the interim chief executive of supermarket chain Kroger and a former CEO of Staples, records show.
There were multiple bids, and the property went into contract within four days, said listing agent George Sarkis of Douglas Elliman, who also represented the buyer.
He declined to comment on the buyer, but said the person has family and roots in Boston. "This is going to play as a second home for him," Sarkis said. Sargent didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
Steve Pagliuca is a former co-chairman of Bain Capital. He was a co-owner of the Celtics until the basketball team was sold for a record $6.1 billion this year.
"It is a special house with lots of light and fantastic location," he said in a text message. "But we moved to Florida three years ago so we are not spending much time in Boston."
Built around 1890, the five-story, brick house sits on a corner lot on Marlborough Street. Spanning roughly 5,680 square feet, it has two kitchens, four bedrooms and a roof deck. There is custom millwork and built-ins throughout the home, along with two fireplaces.
The Pagliucas purchased the property for $5.1 million in 2015, records show. At the time, it was configured as two condominiums. They restored it into a single-family home.
The couple listed it in October. "I don't think they needed as big of a residence in the city of Boston," Sarkis said. In 2023, the Pagliucas also sold their house in Weston, about 15 miles outside Boston, for $8.8 million, records show.
Market snapshot
Back Bay is one of Boston's most affluent and coveted neighborhoods, with a median home sale price of $1.4 million in October, according to Redin.
But Sarkis said the market for single-family homes in the area has "not been easy." This year, only eight homes have sold after being listed on the multiple-listing system, ranging in price from $8 million to $21 million.
The Pagliuca house is completely custom. "It is very rare to get a brownstone on a corner with windows on three sides," Sarkis said.
