Capital One's Tighter Credit Insulates From K-Shaped Economy -- Market Talk

Dow Jones12-10

1610 ET - Capital One Financial isn't seeing the K-shaped economy that many are discussing, but that could be the result of its credit strategy, Chief Executive Rich Fairbank says. The bank started pulling back on credit origination after the pandemic because it expected that many consumers' credit scores could be inflated due to stimulus checks and tax benefits from that era, Fairbank said. That has resulted in better credit performance throughout Capital One's customer base, but the bank's customers could represent a particularly healthy cohort of U.S. consumers, Fairbank says. "What we are observing may not be indicative fully of what's happening out there in the marketplace," he says. (katherine.hamilton@wsj.com)
