Market Chatter: Disney Sends Google Cease-and-Desist Letter Over Alleged Copyright Infringement Using AI

MT Newswires Live00:27

Walt Disney (DIS) has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google over alleged artificial intelligence-related copyright infringement, Variety reported Thursday, citing a letter it reviewed.

The letter claims that Google is copying Disney's copyrighted works on a "massive scale" without authorization to train generative AI models to then distribute copies of Disney's protected content to consumers. The letter also includes examples of images Disney claims were generated using text prompts in Google's AI apps, according to the report.

Disney has demanded that Google stop this alleged copyright violation and apply effective safeguards across its AI services to ensure that no future outputs infringe Disney works, the report added.

"Here, Google's conduct is particularly harmful because Google is leveraging its market dominance across multiple channels to distribute its AI Services and using the draw and popularity of infringed copyrighted works to help maintain that dominance," the report said, quoting the letter.

Disney and Google didn't immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comments.
