Chartwell Retirement Residences has appointed Gary Whitelaw as board chair as part of a broader board refresh.

The Canadian operator of senior living communities said Monday that the move is part of a renewal strategy to balance experience with new perspectives.

As part of its long-term succession planning, Chartwell said over the next four years current chair, Huw Thomas, Directors Brent Binions and Sharon Sallows expect to leave the board, and Gary Whitelaw expects to assume the responsibility of board chair.

Whitelaw has over 35 years of executive and governance experience in the institutional real estate investment, alternative asset management, healthcare and hospitality industries. He retired in 2020 after service for 22 years as chief executive officer of real estate investment management firm BentallGreenOak and its predecessor firms.

Chartwell has also appointed a new chief technology officer, Gordon Chiu, effective on Jan. 1.

Chiu has been a senior executive at Chartwell for nearly a decade, the company said, and will now join its senior executive committee and support technology adoption, including systems, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.
