While still at a preliminary stage, the company says the engagement may open the door to a potentially deeper collaboration.The deal reflects Mt Ridley’s deliberate approach to assessing downstream processing routes in secure, allied jurisdictions, particularly at a time when Western nations are seeking to diversify critical mineral supply chains away from dominant producers.The Mt Ridley project, 25 kilometres north of the deep-water port of Esperance, covers a contiguous 70-kilometre trend along the Grass Patch geological complex in two distinct zones.Extensive historical air-core drilling – totalling around 70,000 metres – has outlined significant rare earth and gallium mineralisation, with only about 20 per cent of the tenure systematically explored to date.Executing this agreement with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is a meaningful step for Mount Ridley. It provides access to world-class technical capability and allows us to advance our understanding of how our rich critical mineral portfolio may be processed. This work strengthens our downstream strategy and reinforces our focus on building a differentiated position in allied critical mineral supply chains.Mount Ridley Mines chief executive officer Allister CairdAt its central Mia prospect, the company last year defined a maiden inferred resource of 168 million tonnes grading 1201 parts per million (ppm) total rare earth oxides (TREO), based on a 750ppm cut-off grade.The total resource includes a higher-grade core of 84 million tonnes at 1558ppm TREO using a 1000ppm cut-off grade.Notably, around 25 per cent of the prospect’s rare earths basket comprises valuable magnet rare earth oxides (MREO), equating to 301ppm MREO – a ratio that includes the key light magnet rare earth elements neodymium and praseodymium.Separate zones within the Grass Patch complex show enrichment in heavier rare earths, accompanied by gallium and scandium.Mt Ridley recently estimated an inferred gallium resource of 839 million tonnes at 29.3ppm gallium, containing over 24,500 tonnes of gallium metal, and believes the resource footprint could grow substantially.With most drilling to date remaining shallow and yet to effectively penetrate the basement, the company believes there is considerable scope for resource expansion, particularly in the higher-value heavy rare earths and scandium components.The company’s ongoing work is now squarely focused on delineating and upgrading the heavy rare earths and scandium components.Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory brings advanced expertise in materials science, chemistry and separation technologies, and participates in the US Critical Materials Institute.Sample preparation is currently underway, with shipment expected early in the new year.For Mt Ridley, the tie-up offers a low-commitment on-ramp to world-class US research firepower, as it sharpens its understanding of how best to process its large-scale ionic-adsorption-style mineralisation.With resource work rolling on at home and early-stage processing studies now underway in a key allied jurisdiction, the company appears to be quietly carving out a place in the fast-evolving Western critical minerals supply chain.Is your ASX-listed company doing something interesting?
