S&P, Nasdaq on Pace for Best CPI Day Since January -- WSJ

U.S. stock indexes rallied Thursday after a softer-than-expected reading for the November consumer-price index, or CPI.

-- The Nasdaq composite led gains among major gauges, up 1.9% in midday trading. The S&P 500 rose 1.3%.

-- That put both indexes on track for their best CPI days since Jan. 15.

-- On that day, stocks and bonds both rallied after a benign December inflation report piqued hopes for more U.S. interest-rate cuts. None materialized until September.
