If artificial intelligence is going to be as big a deal as everybody seems to think, shouldn't we all be using AI to pick the biggest AI winners?

I asked three different AI chatbots the identical question: "Which ETFs use AI to pick stocks?"

It turns out AI can't even do that right.

ChatGPT provided this list of ETFs that "actually use artificial intelligence or AI-driven models to select stocks rather than just invest in companies that benefit from AI":

AI Powered Equity $(AIEQ)$, WisdomTree US AI Enhanced Value $(AIVL)$, Qraft AI-Enhanced ETFs (e.g., AMOM, QRFT).

It also mentioned VanEck Social Sentiment $(BUZZ)$, which uses AI to analyze sentiment.

Perplexity named AIEQ, AIVL and its sibling, WisdomTree International AI Enhanced Value $(AIVI)$, as "pure AI stock pickers." It also mentioned AMOM, QRFT and BUZZ, but no other choices.

Claude came up with AIEQ, QRFT and BUZZ as "the main ETFs that use AI algorithms to actually pick stocks (rather than ETFs that simply invest in AI companies)." It also cited QMOM in passing.

Somehow, AI couldn't even find these funds that use AI to pick investments: Draco Evolution AI, Intelligent Alpha Atlas, LG-QRAFT AI-Powered U.S. Large Cap Core and StockSnips AI-Powered Sentiment US All Cap.

To be fair to the chatbots, some of these funds are very small. And the performance of the entire group is a mixed bag-to say the least.

If AI can barely identify which funds are using it, and if a lot of the funds that are using it aren't even performing well, maybe there's still hope for what the psychologist Amos Tversky liked to call "natural stupidity."
