Xcel Energy (XEL) subsidiary Southwestern Public Service has been sued by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for allegedly causing the Smokehouse Creek Fire in 2024, according to a statement from the OAG Press Office.
Paxton said that Xcel neglected to replace an aging utility pole that was the start of the wildfire, which resulted in the deaths of three people, thousands of cattle and caused over $1 billion in economic loss.
The lawsuit, filed in the District Court of Hemphill County, Texas, seeks monetary damages and civil penalties against Xcel. The state also seeks to require the company to take corrective action against similar events happening in the future, according to the statement.
Xcel did not immediately reply to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
