Carrier (CARR) said Tuesday it began commercial field trials for a new rooftop heat pump as part of a US Department of Energy program to accelerate use of HVAC equipment that can reduce energy use and operating costs.
A 10 to 14-ton unit was installed at a national retailer in upstate New York and finished DOE lab checks showing full heating capacity at 5 degrees Fahrenheit and more than 70% capacity at minus 10 degrees, the company said.
A 15-ton unit is being tested at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and is expected to be moved to a Pennsylvania field site in the coming weeks, with monitoring by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Carrier said.
Carrier said it expects the trials to be completed in summer 2027 and plans commercial availability of the product around the same time.
