Altria Shares Rise After FDA Approves Six Helix Nicotine Pouches

MT Newswires Live01:59

Altria (MO) shares rose more than 1% in recent trading Monday after six on! Plus nicotine pouches, made by its joint venture Helix Innovations, were authorized for marketing by the US Food and Drug Administration on Friday.

These are the first approvals under the FDA's pilot program to streamline nicotine pouch reviews, granted through the premarket tobacco product application pathway. The authorization covers mint, tobacco, and wintergreen flavors in 6 mg and 9 mg strengths, which can be legally sold to US adults aged 21 and over.

The FDA noted that the pouches contain fewer harmful chemicals than traditional smokeless tobacco and may benefit adults switching from cigarettes.

The pilot program's real-time communication allowed the FDA to complete reviews in record time. Altria said it will resume taking new retail and e-commerce orders in select states.
