The plan is to re-enter the well and resume flow testing on the Reifling formation, the shallowest of four Triassic carbonate reservoirs intersected during drilling.The interval has already been perforated, with earlier downhole sampling recovering oil, providing an early vote of confidence in the reservoir’s potential.As part of the restart process, the company says it intends to use wireline to run a swab tool down the well to lift water and drilling mud from the wellbore. As excess material is removed, the weight of the fluid column decreases, lowering hydrostatic pressure, allowing the reservoir’s natural pressure to push the gas and condensate up to the surface, stimulating flow.An acid stimulation program is also planned to clean up the Reifling zone, targeting improved flow from the naturally fractured carbonate reservoir. ADX says any move to test deeper formations will then be guided by a full review of results from the Reifling interval and an earlier test on the Steinalm reservoir.While Welchau-1 may grab the early headlines, ADX’s broader Austrian strategy lies in its shallow gas portfolio. The company has matured seven shallow gas prospects across its ADX-AT-I and ADX-AT-II licences, targeting reservoirs that are around 99 per cent pure methane, close to existing gas pipelines and suitable for rapid development if drilling is successful.The first cab off the rank is the HOCH-1 well, which is expected to be fully permitted by mid-January. Site construction will begin immediately after approvals are granted, with drilling to follow soon after.HOCH-1 sits within the ADX-AT-I licence, which is jointly owned by ADX and Austrian-based oil and gas producer MND Austria. The target well carries a mean prospective resource of 8 billion cubic feet of gas, making it a meaningful standalone target in its own right.ADX plans to follow HOCH-1 with the GOLD-1 well, located in a 100 per cent ADX-held area, while a third prospect, SCHOEN-1, back within the ADX-AT-I licence area, is expected to be permitted by mid-February. A suitable onshore rig has already been contracted, with ADX opting for an experienced European operator well versed in Austrian conditions.What sets this program apart is its repeatability. Several of the shallow gas prospects sit in tight clusters, allowing any discoveries to be developed as a hub-style project that would share infrastructure, keeping costs down and speeding up production.ADX says the targets have been generated through advanced 3D seismic interpretation and AI analysis of basin-wide datasets, helping to keep geological risk low.With a 75 per cent economic interest at Welchau and full ownership across large parts of its shallow gas acreage, success across even part of the 2026 program could materially change the company’s fortunes.
