NiSource has received a federal order to keep open a coal plant in Indiana that had previously been scheduled to retire at the end of this year.

The utility company's Northern Indiana Public Service Co. subsidiary said Wednesday the order is in effect for 90 days.

NIPSCO said it will comply with the order, and any subsequent orders, and that it is reviewing its effect on its customers and business.

"We recognize the importance of both reliability and cost management for our customers, and we will continue to engage with federal, state and local stakeholders as we adapt to evolving regulatory requirements," NIPSCO's Chief Operating Officer Vince Parisi said.

The R.M. Schahfer Generating Station, located in Wheatfield, Ind., was previously scheduled to retire on Dec. 31.

The order comes after President Trump earlier this year signed executive orders aimed at expanding the production and use of coal in the U.S. after years of decline. As part of the push, the Trump administration has worked to ensure that fossil-fuel power plants slated for closure continue operating.
