SOUTH AFRICAN MARKETS

The South African rand slipped against a stronger dollar in holiday-thinned trade on Friday, but analysts said it could soon resume its rally. .JZAR/

GLOBAL MARKETS

Asian shares rose broadly on Monday tracking tech-driven gains on Wall Street, while the yen floundered near all-time lows against the euro and Swiss franc as higher interest rates piled pressure on Japanese government debt. MKTS/GLOB

WALL STREET

U.S. stocks closed higher on Friday after a rocky start to the week, as a rebound in technology shares offset tumbling consumer stocks such as Nike. .N

GOLD

Gold jumped past the $4,400-per-ounce level for the first time on Monday, riding on growing expectations of further U.S. rate cuts and strong safe-haven demand, with silver also joining the rally to hit an all-time high. GOL/
